Deep Tissue vs Swedish Massage: 5 Key Differences

It is the question we hear most at reception: “Which one should I choose?” The debate of deep tissue vs Swedish massage comes down to what your body needs today. Both are excellent, but they have different goals, pressure and sensations. This guide will help you decide in two minutes.

Swedish massage in a nutshell

The Swedish technique uses long gliding strokes, kneading, gentle friction and light stretches. The goal is general relaxation, better circulation and the release of superficial tension. Pressure is light to medium and the rhythm is flowing.

Deep tissue massage in a nutshell

Deep tissue work uses slower strokes and sustained, firm pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and fascia. The goal is to release chronic knots, adhesions and the soreness that follows intense physical effort.

Deep tissue vs Swedish massage: 5 key differences

1. Pressure

Swedish is light to medium; deep tissue is firm and focused. You can always ask your therapist to adjust.

2. Main goal

Swedish aims to relax and energize the whole body. Deep tissue aims to solve specific problem areas.

3. Speed and technique

Swedish strokes are long and rhythmic. Deep tissue strokes are slow, with pauses on tight points.

4. How it feels

Swedish feels soothing from start to finish. Deep tissue can feel intense in some areas — a “good pain” — but never sharp or harmful.

5. Aftercare

After Swedish you will feel light and sleepy. After deep tissue some areas may feel tender for a day; drink water and stretch gently.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Swedish if you just arrived in Cusco, feel stressed, are new to massage or prefer gentle pressure. See our Swedish massage.
  • Choose deep tissue if you just finished a trek, practice sports or carry chronic tension in neck and back. See our deep tissue massage.
  • Still unsure? Book a relaxing massage and tell us how you feel — we adapt the pressure during the session.

If you want something even firmer, our strong pressure massage includes trigger-point work. For a deeper look at the research on massage, the NCCIH has a clear summary.

A tip from our therapists

Many trekkers enjoy a Swedish massage on arrival to relax and a deep tissue session after the trail to recover. Read our guide to massage after the Inca Trail for the best timing.
